Thailand gets ready to become a key destination for LGBT retirement

More than 200 million LGBT population in the vicinity of Thailand may be leveraging Thailand's inclusive culture to enjoy health, wellness and long stay in the Kingdom.

31 Aug 2023 - Thailand may land in a pink dollar windfall due to its long-standing culture of inclusiveness in the region. Almost half of the world's LGBT population is within the vicinity of Thailand, with India accounting for more than 100 million, China accounting for more than 80 million and Thailand, Vietnam and the rest of Asia-Pacific accounting for more than 10 million people. With the increasing insight into the magnitude of the LGBT population in the world, LGBT ageing and retirement are now key components of the pink economy as LGBT baby boomers are already in their late 50s to 70s.

The evolution of Thailand's pink economy is expected to evolve from a party and tourism economy to a health and wellness plus retirement economy as Thailand continues to lead in cultural inclusiveness and diversity in the region. Borderless.lgbt, an inclusive health and wellness division of Borderless Healthcare Group (BHG) is set up to support Thailand in developing an unprecedented model of retirement living complete with health and wellness cloud services in the comfort of their home.

"LGBT health and wellness can now be realised with sick-care in the clinic and well-care at home and even at wellness resorts giving an unprecedented seamless care experience. This new model of care with the option of having local and global health and wellness experts to provide best-of-class knowledge to the client is definitely a gamechanger in LGBT retirement living," says Dr Wayne Ho, a US-based founding stakeholder and medical director of Borderless.lgbt. Dr Ho is also an assistant professor at the University of Southern California and a practising physician specialised in LGBT medicine in the US.

An immersive telemedicine call centre and an inclusive immersive wellness suite to allow LGBT clients to book top health and wellness experts in the world is already being set up in various locations across Thailand, including in Bangkok and Phuket. Real estate developers are already in discussion with Borderless.lgbt to explore the development of high-tech wellness-centric retirement living projects in Thailand.

"We hope to add the best-of-class wellness architecture that can interoperate with borderless technologies to achieve an unprecedented new living experience with the convergence of health, wellness, hospitality and nature in Thailand," says Frven Lim, founding stakeholder of Borderless.lgbt. Frven is also a London based architect with special interest in holistic well-being design and a WELL-accredited professional by International WELL Building Institute in USA.
